Biography

Boldness, joie de vivre, glamor - Demètre Chiparus visualized the hedonistic spirit of the 1920s with its chryselephantine sculptures and statuettes. His female models are conscious of their beauty and flaunt their bodies in theatrical poses, often with their arms spread out wide. Chiparus found inspiration above all in the world of ballet and theater. Like no other, he was able to present extravagant costumes with all details and their texture.

Demètre Chiparus originally came from a family of wealthy landowners in Dorohoi and Romania. Financially secure, he traveled to Italy in 1909 to study sculpture and there he started his artistic training with Raffaello Romanelli. Then, in 1912 he went to Paris where he studied with Antonin Mercié and Jean-Marie Boucher at the Ecole National Superieure des Beaux Arts.
