Biography

Mathilde Flögl (Brno 1893 - 1958 Salzburg) From 1907 to 1909, Mathilde Flögl attended the Imperial Royal College for Weaving in Svitavy. She then went to the School of Applied Arts in Vienna, where she studied from 1909 to 1916 with Josef Hoffmann and Oskar Strnad, among others. From 1916 to 1931 she worked closely with Josef Hoffmann at the Wiener Werkstätte. Her work is extensive and varied. Ceramics, ivory, leather, wood, graphics and commercial art, enamel, glass decorations, fabrics, fashion, accessories, lace and tulle were her materials. In 1925 she was awarded a gold medal at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Since then she focused on leatherwork and designed numerous bags. After the closure of the Wiener Werkstätte, she had her own studio for fashion and interior design in Vienna from 1931 to 1935. She was a member of the Austrian Werkbund and the Viennese Women's Art. In the mid-1930s she was called to Czechoslovakia, where she taught at various technical schools. During the war she returned to Vienna. Until 1951 she taught at schools for women's trades and gave courses at the artistic adult education center in the Academy of Fine Arts. In turn, she worked closely with Hoffmann again in the experimental workshop of the arts and crafts association.
