Biography
Franz Hofstötter (Munich 1871 - 1958 Bachern)
Franz Hofstoetter - from Fresco Painting to Impressionist Glass
Frank Josef (Franz) Hofstoetter was born in Munich in 1871. In 1893 he completed his studies in painting and sculpture at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. He spent the next three years travelling within Europe. His main work was painting and fresco design on public buildings and in churches. For example, from 1905 to 1913 he designed the interiors of St. Veit in Weichering, St. Josef in Weiden and St. Maximilian in Munich. However, it was his mural of 1896 for the town hall in Passau that is said to have attracted the attention of Ritter Max von Spaun, the then manager of the Johann Lötz Wwe. glassworks in Klostermühle, to the artist. He promptly brought the Bavarian to Klostermühle. During the period of their collaboration (1899 to around 1912), groundbreaking works were created. Hofstötter's vases, with their finely graded colour gradients and intricately combed decoration, were presented to great acclaim at Lötz's stand at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900. The artist died in 1958 in Bachern.
Höfstötter appeared at the Nuremberg State Exhibition as early as 1896, before being awarded a Grand Prix at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900 for his designs for the glass manufacturer Joh. Lötz Wwe.
