Biography

Archibald Knox (Isle of Man 1864 - 1933 Isle of Man)

From 1878 to 1884 Archibald Knox studied at the Douglas School of Art on his island, where he also taught after completing his studies. In 1897 he moved to London, where he worked with Christopher Dresser to design metal objects for the Silver Studio, a supplier to the department store Liberty & Co. in London. From 1898 Archibald Knox worked directly for Liberty & Co. Metal objects, fabrics and carpets were created. The metal and jewelry series "Cymric" made of silver and "Tudric" made of pewter, with Celtic motifs as decoration ("Celtic Revival") were made by the company W.H. Haseler in Birmingham. He also held various teaching positions. In 1911 Archibald Knox founded the "Knox Guild of Craft and Designs" with former students, which existed until 1939. In 1912 Knox held a teaching position in Pennsylvania and designed textiles on the side. In 1913 he returned permanently to the Isle of Man, where he devoted his twilight years to painting.
