Maria Likarz (Przemyśl 1893 - 1971 Rome)

Thinking of Maria Likarz, thinking of the glass bead necklaces of the Wiener Werkstätte.

Maria Likarz received her education at the Art School for Women and Girls and at the School of Applied Arts in Vienna. From 1912 to 1931/32 she worked at the Wiener Werkstätte on and off. At first she began to design graphics, but she also worked with ceramics and enamel before turning to fashion and textile designs. In 1916 she established the enamel class at Burg Giebichenstein in Halle and led it until 1920. From 1920 to 1947 she was married to the doctor Dr. Richard Martin Strauss. She emigrated with him to Italy in 1938. Her late work consisted mainly of ceramic pieces. She died in Rome in 1971.

In the course of her career she participated in various exhibitions: the Fashion Exhibition 1915, the German Trade Show Munich, 1922, Exhibition of Works of Modern Austrian Arts and Crafts, 1923, at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes 1925, in The Hague 1927/28 and at the Werkbund Exhibition 1930. In addition, she was represented in exhibitions of the Künstlerhaus and the Vienna Women's Art.
