Christian Neureuther (Untersotzbach 1868 - 1921 Hanau)

Christian Neureuther - Art Nouveau Ceramics in Hesse

Christian Neureuther was born in 1868 in Untersotzbach/Birstein. He joined the Wächtersbach earthenware factory as an apprentice as early as 1882. After his apprenticeship, Prince Ferdinand Maximilian von Ysenburg, the owner of the earthenware factory, sent him to the Lichte Drawing and Modelling School for further training, where he studied under Lorenz Hutschenreuther. In 1893 he graduated from the Royal School of Applied Arts in Munich. Inspired by the Art Nouveau designs of the Darmstadt Artists' Colony, he modernised the formal and decorative language of the earthenware factory. Founded as early as 1901, he headed the Wächtersbach Christian Neureuther Ceramic Studio from 1903, an independent department within the earthenware factory that was not closed until eight years after his death. He died in Hanau in 1921.

Among other exhibitions, Neureuther also participated in the World's Fair in St. Louis, 1904, where his work was awarded a gold medal.
