Biography
Marc Newson is an internationally renowned industrial designer whose work transcends the boundaries of art, craft and functionality. He grew up in Australia and studied jewellery design at Sydney College of the Arts, where he graduated in 1984. He attracted attention early in his career when he created his first major work, the ‘Lockheed Lounge’, in 1988. With its futuristic and organic design, the aluminium lounge chair marked a decisive turning point in Newson's career and contributed significantly to his international breakthrough. Newson has worked in Sydney, Tokyo and Paris. His studio Marc Newson Limited has been based in the UK since 1997.
He began his rapid career as a designer with handmade furniture and clocks in a workshop in Sydney. His first designs included the Super Guppy Lamp, Pod of Drawers and the Embryo Chair, the latter of which has been in production since its launch. His work spans a wide range of disciplines, from furniture and homeware to vehicle design and architecture. He has worked for some of the world's biggest brands, including Louis Vuitton, Ferrari, Nike and Hermès. Newson was also involved in the design of the ‘Apple Watch’. In addition to his work as a designer for consumer goods, Newson has also worked on projects in the aviation industry. For example, he designed the interior for the business class of Quantas Airways.
His status as one of the most influential designers of our time is also reflected in the prices realised at auctions. The ‘Lockheed Lounge’ is one of the most expensive pieces of furniture in the world. His work is also exhibited in the world's largest museums and is represented in all major permanent design collections.
