Paul Nicolas (Laval-sur-Vologne 1875 - 1952 Nancy)

From Emile Gallé to his own workshop

Nicolas, who studied architecture, joined Emile Gallé's glass manufactory in 1893. There he stood out with great skill and ideas, so that after Gallé's death in 1904 he took over the management of the company together with Louis Hestaux. After the end of the First World War, he opened his own finishing studio in Nancy with other former colleagues. From 1923, he worked increasingly with the Saint-Louis company. Before the outbreak of World War II, he was able to employ 15 people in the Paul Nicolas, Verreries de Saint Louis-Münzthal, experimenting with various glass finishing techniques. The company existed, with ups and downs until Nicolas' death in 1952. On behalf of Emile Gallé, he supplied the 1900 World's Fair, and on his own behalf he also participated in the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels in 1925 and the Paris World's Fair in 1937, among others.
