Johan Rohde (Randers 1856 - 1935 Hellerup)

The young Johan had initially studied medicine, but soon turned to the fine arts. He began training as a painter and graphic artist at the Royal Academy of Art in Copenhagen. A year later he opened his own painting school, specializing in anatomy. As early as the 1890s, he worked in the metal workshop of Mogens Ballin, where he met Georg Jensen. Rohde moved to the latter's newly founded silversmith shop as early as 1906. By the time of his death, he would produce a variety of tableware and cutlery that are still highly sought after today. From 1908-12, he presided over Kunstwerkes Studieskole. Less well known is that the versatile designer also created furniture and textiles.

Rohde first participated in the exhibition of the Royal Danish Academy of Art in 1887 with his paintings. He showed the first silver objects in 1907 at the Danish Museum of Decorative Arts.
