Erica von Scheel (Metz 1881- Hamburg 1966)
After attending the Berlin painting school for ladies, Erica von Scheel applied to the arts and crafts seminar in Weimar in 1902. As one of Henry van de Velde's first students, she was instrumental in establishing the institution.
A master student and soon to become van de Velde's assistant, she would later become a teacher herself at the Weimar School of Arts and Crafts. The artistic works of the multi-talented artist were shown at numerous exhibitions in Germany and abroad and received numerous awards, such as at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair.
Her collaboration with the Reinhold Hanke stoneware factory in Höhr dates back to 1903. She had various of her ceramic works produced there. In 1912, she married the painter Ivo Hauptmann (1886-1973), the eldest son of Gerhart Hauptmann. She had a lifelong friendship with Henry van de Velde.
