Biography

Victor Vasarely occupies a special position among the artists of Op Art (optical art). Born in 1906 in Pecs/Hungary, the artist first trained as a graphic artist in Budapest. In 1930, he moved to Paris, where he initially worked as a commercial artist and designed posters. It was during this time that he became interested in trompe l'oeil drawings, graphic patterns and illusionary representations of space. In 1944 he then turned to painting. In addition to graphic patterns, his works initially also show figurative themes, but as early as 1947 he devoted himself exclusively to geometric patterns and abstract motifs. The apparent movement of optical patterns led him to his manifesto of kinetic art in the 1950s. He took part in documenta I-IV. One of his most famous works is the diamond logo for Renault from 1972. Until his death in 1997, he created paintings as well as several three-dimensional works, such as sculptures and façade designs with his characteristic geometric designs.
