Menzel chair' - '50642', 1950/51
H. 78.5 x 43.5 x 52.5 cm. Made by VEB Deutsche Werkstätten, Dresden-Hellerau. Beech ply, 29 layers, stained dark.
One of the most important designs of the GDR in the postwar years, designed by designer and draughtsman Erich Menzel. The first chipless bent plywood chair. "(... ) It was made of 29 layers of resin-drenched plywood, that are being moulded with the aid of a steam-heated forging die that exerts a hydaulic pressure of 60 kg/cm2 and bends 140 grades in 25 minutes (...)" (Vom Sofakissen zum Städtebau, p. 117). The chair has no screws or any other pieces of metal.
