Auction 174A

Art Nouveau - Art Deco

Catalogue

The auction week in June begins with a careful selection of Art Nouveau and Art Deco objects.

The works of Daum Frères dominate the glass chapter in terms of quality and quantity. Almost one hundred lots from the famous glass factory will be offered in the auction on Tuesday afternoon. The rare 'Iris' vase from 1898 stands out in particular. Its capsule shape is emphasized by the elaborately etched and wheel-engraved decoration of three irises on a marbled ground.

Hungarian ceramist Vilmos Zsolnay is represented with seven top-class works with different decorations in Eosin glaze. Particularly beautiful and typical of his work is a rare conical jug in strong shades of red and blue, which depicts a campfire in an evening tree landscape.

Particularly interesting works await those interested in the figurative metal and bronze selection. Two bas-reliefs with female figures in expressive dance by Koloman Moser, planned as decoration for a shelf in the salon of Dr. Hermann Wittgenstein's apartment, are now offered as a pair in simple black frames. Gustav Gurschner's figurative table light 'Die Verlassene' from 1897 is similarly rare. The model was exhibited at the Arts and Crafts Exhibition of the Secession in Vienna. An unclothed, kneeling woman reaches out longingly towards an equally unclothed man who, climbing up the shaft, holds on to another woman.

An absolute rarity will also be offered in the furniture section of the auction. The wonderful chest made of cast bronze and carved walnut wood was the result of a collaboration between Emile Gallé and Tokuzō Takashima (1850-1931). Trained as a forester and theorist, Takashima was sent to Nancy by the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture for further training. His love of art and botany soon led him to make friends with the artists there and to become creative himself. He felt particularly close to Emile Gallé. The mutual fruitful influence of the two artists is evident in the chest with its lifelike depiction of bamboo and millet plants. This rare piece comes from a German private collection.

These and other special pieces can be found in the Art Nouveau section of the catalog.

New record for Zsolnay ceramics at Quittenbaum Kunstauktionen!

Thanks to the lively participation of numerous clients in Germany and abroad, Quittenbaum Kunstauktionen is pleased to report a very successful first day of the auction week in June.

In addition to numerous increases in the glass offerings, with Daum Frères with enameled vases and the Bohemian company Loetz Wwe., Klastersky Mlyn with their exceptionally beautiful 'Phänomen' vases standing out as winners, it was above all the ceramics that stood out in a positive way. Quittenbaum succeeded in bringing together seven highly attractive works by the Hungarian ceramics company Vilmos Zsolnay from three private collections. These were all hotly contested and were only knocked down for many times their estimated prices after minutes-long battles. According to research on the international auction platform Artnet, a new price record for works by Zsolnay in the last ten years was set for the beautiful large vase with a very artistically designed golden dragon. Enthusiasts in the room, on the phones and online outbid each other until a customer from another European country came out on top at 54,000 euros.

Further attractive objects from the Art Nouveau auction 174A can still be found in the post-auction sale until July 12, 2024.
