Ingo Maurer
'San-Ju' ceiling light from the 'Uchiwa' series, 1975

H. 53.5 cm (without suspension), Ø 57 cm. Made by Design M, Ingo Maurer, Munich. Bamboo cane, rice paper, cotton, brass. Marked: manufacturer label.

The light consists of 30 fans. It can be installed in two different versions (pls. see last preview picture). An extraordinary level of handwork and precision is required to produce the unique 'Uchiwa'-fans made of bamboo cane and rice paper. For this purpose, Ingo Maurer hired up to 21 workers from Japan in the 1970s, who had lost their jobs as a result of the chemical pollution of Marugame Bay. The undertaking paid off and the project became a great success. To this day, these rare luminaires provide a uniquely atmospheric spatial experience thanks to their warm illumination effect and effortless floating appearance.
