Catalogue

350 design objects from the last 100 years of design history will be presented in the June auction.

Exciting objects can be found in the field of Italian design. From a private Venetian collection comes the rocking lounger 'Dondolo'. It was designed by Cesare Leonardi and Franca Stagi for Elco Venice in 1967. Made of white fiberglass-reinforced polyester, the piece is realistically valued at € 10,000 - 15,000. Ettore Sottsass created the side table model "Rocchettone T.44" for a small furniture collection for Poltronova, Pistoia. Between 1958 and 1966, Sottsass designed several pieces of furniture with clear geometric shapes, which still clearly stand out stylistically from the later Memphis style. Among the highlights of the auction are two side tables made of dark wood with color elements in red, which are offered for € 7,000.

German design is well represented. The 'Ju-Yon', 'Ju-Ku' and 'San-Ju' ceiling lights by Munich-based light artist Ingo Maurer consist of 14, 19 and 30 rice paper fans respectively. They are part of the currently very popular 'Uchiwa' series. In the 1970s, Maurer hired several workers from Japan who lost their jobs due to chemical pollution in Marugame Bay to produce the famous fans. The lights on offer can be mounted in two different ways and have starting prices ranging from €6,000 to €15,000. Other works by the designer round out the selection. Prices start at €1,000. Two "Madonna and Child" armchairs by Luigi Colani, upholstered in beautiful pigeon blue leather, are from a small series from 1991. They illustrate the designer's dynamic, organic style, sweeping lines, and love of experimentation. The pair of chairs will go up for auction on Wednesday afternoon for €5,000. Several objects by Berlin artist Stiletto (Frank Schreiner) represent New German Design. A ceiling light, a candleholder, and even a small table lamp in a plant pot - there are five lots in all, with estimated prices ranging from €300 to €2,500.

The Austro-Hungarian architect and visual artist Friedrich Kiesler designed his Correalist furniture for Peggy Guggenheim's "Art of this Century Gallery" in New York in 1942. Biomorphic elements, which were distributed throughout the exhibition rooms, offered visitors an interactive seating option. According to the architect, the "Correalist Instrument" model was intended to fulfill 18 different functions. The "18-in-1 object" and a rocking chair, both from a re-edition by Wittmann, are valued between 2,200 and 3,000€ each.

Design from Finland represents a private collection of handicrafts by Bertel Gardberg. The craft company Noormarkun Käsityöt was founded in 1961 by art collector, patron and designer Maire Gullichsen with a clear vision of supporting Finnish craftsmanship. Gullichsen engaged designers such as Bertel Gardberg, Aino and Alvar Aalto and Nanny Still. Gardberg designed numerous art objects that were used in Villa Mairea, a project by Alvar Aalto for Maire Gullichsen. 19 high-quality objects made of teak and brass are now available in the auction. Mortars, bowls, candlesticks and much more - at estimated prices between €200 and €4,000.

Furthermore, objects by Jean Boris Lacroix, Angelo Lelli and Paavo Tynell are on offer that will make collectors' hearts beat faster. Quittenbaum will be offering these designs and much more in the 'Design' auction on June 12.

The design auction on Wednesday was a continuation of the first auction day with more excellent results and exciting bidding battles for selected design objects.

Italian design from the second half of the 20th century was particularly sought after on 12 June. Two European bidders pushed up the price for the elegant ceiling light by Max Ingrand from 7,000 € to 13,000 €. The objects by Enzo Mari, designed for Danese Milano, were in high demand as well. The multiples made of acrylic glass and the vases from the 'Bambu' series achieved double the asking price in some cases and were purchased by both Italian and German collectors. The palm tree sculpture 'Per Costruzione di Oasi' by postmodern artist Mario Schifano from the 1980s almost doubled its starting price. An Italian enthusiast bought the palm tree for 2,100 €.

The 'Flightfile' desk by Mark Brazier-Jones from 1990 is extravagant and unique. Two online bidders appreciated this and outbid each other until the participant from France finally won the lot for 10,000 €.

After a lively bidding battle, the display case from the Dessau Bauhaus workshop was knocked down for 7,000 €, almost three times its estimate (2,500 €). The functionalist furniture item, consigned by a German private collector, was exhibited at the Landesmuseum Mainz on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus and is now making its way into a wellknown museum collection.

The works by French designer Philippe Starck have already achieved top prices at several auctions. They were also coveted at this auction. The hammer fell at 11,000 € for the rare 'Theater du Monstre' cabinet - a piece of furniture in architectural form. Within a very short time, three bidders outbid each other and the winning bid went to a dedicated collector from France.

We would like to thank all the bidders for their participation! For all those who were unable to attend the auction, we are offering the unsold lots in the post-auction sale up to and including 12 July.
