David Young Cameron (1865 Glasgow - 1945 London)
'Holyrood House in 1745', 1896
Retrospective view of Holyrood House near Edinburgh, decorated with English flags, at the time of the Scottish defeat at the Battle of Culloden in 1745, with English horsemen in wigs and soldiers in front of the two-winged house. Etching on yellowish paper. 33.2 x 47 cm (image), 51.3 x 64.8 cm (frame). Inscribed in print lower right: Etched by DY Cameron for the Art Union of Scotland, 1896, signed lower right: DYCameron (pencil). Framed under glass in a passe-partout.
Not de-framed. Cameron's etchings, which he printed himself, were only published in small editions, as the artist refused to have the copper plates steeled. Painter and pre-eminent Scottish etcher, DY Cameron became a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers in 1895. His architectural etchings gave him a worldwide reputation through his special exhibitions in New York in 1895 and in the Gutekunst Gallery in London in 1898. At the International Art Exhibition in Munich in 1905 he was awarded the gold medal.
