The stool is shown - in a colored version - in a photo from an album with Hoetger's furniture designs from 1924/25 (a copy of the catalog is in the Böttcherstrasse archive in Bremen). The catalog shows furniture with carved ornaments, sculptural forms, executed in striking craftsmanship with visible tenons instead of screw or nail connections. The stools shown in the photo show a mixture of animal figure and everyday object. The function of this piece of furniture cannot be clearly explained, as with other Hoetger pieces; a dual function as a stool or storage table can be assumed. See Kerls, Bernhard Hoetger.
