The adventures of 'Bild Lilli' by Reinhard Beuthien appeared first in the nation-wide 'Bild' newspaper in 1952. The little stories became so popular that the comic strip featured on a regular basis in the newspaper from 1952 to 1964. The first designs for a figurine were made as early as 1953. From 1955 to 1964, around 130,000 'Bild Lillis' were sold worldwide. Ruth Handler, the creator of the Barbie doll bought several of these dolls on a holiday in Europe and modelled her doll after the German example.
