Ingo Maurer
'San-Ju' ceiling light from the 'Uchiwa' series, 1975

H. 53.5 cm (without suspension), Ø 57 cm. Made by Design M, Ingo Maurer, Munich. Bamboo cane, rice paper, cotton, brass. Marked: manufacturer's label.

The lamp consists of 30 fans. It can be mounted in two different ways (see previous illustration). The production of the distinctive 'Uchiwa' fans from bamboo canes and rice paper requires an extraordinary level of manual work and precision. In the 1970s, Ingo Maurer hired up to 21 employees from Japan who had lost their jobs as a result of the chemical pollution of Marugame Bay. The plan was worthwhile and the project was a great success. To this day, the rare lamps provide a uniquely atmospheric spatial experience with their warm lighting effect and their effortlessly floating appearance.
