The saying on the shade ring refers to the epic poem by John Milton (1608-1674), an English poet, political thinker and civil servant under Oliver Cromwell. His most famous poem is 'Paradise Lost', which was published in 1667. In this work, Milton describes the fall of man from paradise and the rebellion of the fallen angels against God. The quoted passage is from the first book, lines 221-270.
