El Lissitzky; Wladimir Majakowski
'Dlia golosa' (For the Voice), 1923
Lissitzky's innovative approaches to graphic and book design are particularly evident in his groundbreaking work "For the Voice", a collection of thirteen famous poems by the Russian futurist Vladimir Mayakovsky. The poems were intended to be read aloud and to make it easier for readers to quickly find the passages they wanted, Lissitzky developed a thumb index with titles. He also designed a separate title page for each poem, creating images by combining different sized fonts in red and black. Illustrated book with letterpress and offset lithography, 25 letterpress illustrations in black and red, on vellum. 18.7 x 13.2 cm. From an edition of 2,000 - 3,000 copies. Published by Gosudarstvennoe izdatel'stvo (State Publishing House), Moscow-Berlin 1923, printed by the State Printing Office, Moscow-Berlin.
